Contract Interiors UK Ltd
A Family Business
Hayley Feeley, Managing Director, has been associated with the Company for many years. John Roy begin_of_the_skype_highlightingend_of_the_skype_highlighting, her father and Chairman of the Company, started the business in 1970. Here is a personal account of the Company’s story so far…..
Our Story
Contract Interiors is based in a custom built facility in a converted apple orchard in Alresford. We sell furniture for the contract market and employ 45 Staff in the UK. The company has shown continued and sustained growth over the last few years. In 1998 we turned over £250,000, we predict we will turn over £3million in 2011. Contract Interiors is a Limited Company with two trading divisions, ChairsGB.com and Frames Furniture.
The Company has been established since 1970 when John Roy started building bar stools for local pubs in a small workshop in Dunmow Essex. The business developed into Manufacturing Complete Themes and Schemes in Pubs, Our main business for a while included exporting “Dirty Nelly” Themed Irish Pubs to Scandinavia. On the completion of each scheme John would travel to the premises and attend the business launch, he marked the opening by playing Scotland the Brave on his Bagpipes. John still requires little encouragement to whip out his instrument for the entertainment of others.
In 1998 the £ was strong against other European currencies which meant that our Manufacturing and Export Business was reducing. We decided to set up a separate division called ChairsGB.com. Our ChairsGB customer base is primarily in the UK leisure and licensed Industries.
We retained our in house manufacture of bench seating, custom-made tabletops and upholstery services. We started importing from Eastern Europe and Asia, fully finished furniture and other products in component form ready for assembly and finishing in the UK. We bring in this mix of items for flexibility and custom finishing. The items that come in already finished are of a lower cost than the ones that we have to custom finish.
Our best selling products are Stacking Chairs, Dining Chairs and Bench Seating. We pride ourselves on having good quality products that withstand the heavy use our customers demand and invest a lot of time in perfecting product design.
ChairsGB was getting a lot of enquiries from other
furnishers and wholesalers, so in 2006 Frames Furniture was formed to target
this market. This wholesale division targets people who are selling on and
large business chains that are regularly buying furniture. We generally supply
the same products as ChairsGB but sell in a different way, giving customers
brochures without prices and tools to sell the products. This division makes up
around 10% of the business.
Since the recession started we have been looking more at our manufactured items and are completing more and more projects which need a lot of manufacture, we are getting excited about how much business is out there and in 2011 we have increased our turnover by 50% just by saying yes to more project work.
With the £ getting weaker our export business is looking inviting again. We are increasing our range of manufactured items and are looking for ways in which we can manufacture and export more. This is an exciting time for us; if we can manufacture more of what we are selling and can keep our turnover growing this will ultimately mean more employment in the local community.
We have all kinds of personalities and everyone pays an integral part in the running of the Business. One of the good things is our well-balanced group; we have staff aged 18 to 63, Male Female, Chinese and Polish. Some of our staff have been with the company for a many years, Colin; our Dispatch Leader is the one of the longest standing with 25 years under his belt!
ChairsGB and The Community
We have been based in North-East Essex for many years and we try
to help the local community as much as we can. We are a large employer for this
area. We provide wood off cuts, free of charge, to the community. We support
local charity events and organizations as much as possible, including the
annual Colchester Race for Life
The Environment
With regards to helping the environment we have a
wood burner to heat part of our factory and use off cuts to fuel it. We use a
lot of furniture made from Rubber wood, which is one of the world’s most
sustainable woods. All our metal products are made from in part or 100% recycled
steel. We use Colchester Skip hire to handle all of our other waste because of
their reputation for recycling.
What our Customers Say about us
We have an excellent reputation in the industry and around half of our sales are from customer recommendations. Here are some of the comments from our feedback forms……..
“Tom and the Girls in the Office are fantastic, their service and manners are great! On Delivery Lee the Driver was really helpful” Monseni from G and G Functions
"We visited your premises and were extremely happy with your attention to our requirements, your staff were very helpful and pleasant” Anon
“Dealing with ChairsGB has been a very pleasant experience, Irene is fantastic” Peter Lefeure from Uffizzi
Comments like this show us we are on the right track. We get about 15 positive feedback forms, like this, a week. We’re not perfect however and sometimes we get ones that tell us about problems, for these Jobs we do our best and rectify the problem as soon as possible and improve things for the future.
